A Statement from State Bar of New Mexico President Aja N. Brooks Regarding the Presidential Action of Jan. 21, 2025 Referencing State and Local Bar Associations

Brooks,AjaThe State Bar of New Mexico has been supporting New Mexico attorneys and assisting the public for over 139 years. The values and mission of the State Bar of New Mexico are guided by the Supreme Court Rule 24-101 NMRA which, among other things, provides, “In order to aid the courts in improving the administration of justice…to promote and support the needs of all members, to be cognizant of the needs of individual and minority members of the profession, including the full and equal participation of minorities and women in the State Bar of New Mexico and the profession at large...”


As the first Black President of the State Bar of New Mexico, I am proud of our ongoing efforts to be an inclusive organization consistent with our rule, mission and the law. We are steadfast in our commitment to fairness and justice and dedicated to welcoming all voices into our profession.

The State Bar of New Mexico was organized in 1886 as Bar association for the territory and is composed of more than 10,000 members (active and inactive). Its purposes are to aid the courts in administering justice and preserving the rule of law, and to foster a high standard of integrity and competence within the legal profession.
