Volunteer Opportunities

Yes! There is always a need for pro-bono assistance in the field of immigration law. Below are some programs for which our members have volunteered. If you’re a member of NMILS, and have volunteered for a program that is not listed, please send it our way and we’ll add it here.

Ask-a-Lawyer Call-In Program

In coordination with Law Day, the State Bar Young Lawyers Division coordinates a call-in program where attorneys staff the phones in four regions of the state and answer questions on a wide variety of topics. If you are an attorney and are interested in volunteering, contact Member Services

CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project

Volunteer lawyers spend a week or more in the San Antonio, Texas area where they receive on-the-job training and litigation experience. For more information visit CARAprobono.org.

The Veterans Civil Justice Legal Initiative Clinics

A combined effort of the State Bar Young Lawyers Division and  New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System, this clinic offers free legal advice to our veterans on a variety of legal topics, including immigration. The clinic occurs on the second Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon  at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial, 1100 Louisiana Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, 87108 (just off Gibson). Volunteers can specify areas of practice to give advice advice and counsel. Volunteer orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. and breakfast is provided.
