What Does It Mean to Be an American?

A Reflection for the “Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition”

As part of the State Bar of New Mexico’s “Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition,” marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, we invite members of New Mexico’s legal community to reflect on a simple but enduring question:

What does it mean to be an American?

This special issue examines 250 years of legal development through a four-Act narrative structure, culminating in a final act that examines contemporary reflection grounded in history, institutional integrity and the Rule of Law.

Rather than commentary on current events, this feature is intended to provide thoughtful, nonpartisan reflections that consider:

  • The Constitution as a framework
  • The Rule of Law in practice
  • The role of lawyers as officers of the legal system
  • The attorney’s oath
  • Civic education and public understanding of lawful process

Selected submissions may appear in the “Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition,” publishing July 4, 2026.

Submission Guidelines

  • If submitted in writing:
    • Maximum 150 words
  • If submitted in video:
    • Maximum 30 seconds
  • Reflective and historically grounded tone
  • Nonpartisan and non-advocacy in nature
  • Open to members of the State Bar of New Mexico
