In alignment with the United States of America’s 250th anniversary, the State Bar of New Mexico is preparing a special commemorative edition of the Bar Bulletin to be published on July 4, 2026.
This once-in-a-generation issue will not be structured as a traditional Bar Bulletin issue, but rather, a commemorative, historical publication exploring 250 years of legal history in New Mexico. Through a carefully structured narrative, it will examine the development of New Mexico’s legal institutions and the evolution of the legal profession within the broader American context.
This special edition is intended to be revisited well beyond the anniversary year.
A Limited Edition of the Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition with exclusive content will be available to purchase! More information coming soon!
The special commemorative issue will be organized into four narrative Acts, guiding readers chronologically through New Mexico’s legal history:
Law in a pre-territorial New Mexico.
Implementing the rule of law in New Mexico.
Institutions, courts and modernization of the legal profession.
New Mexico’s legal community’s steadfast commitment to service and stewardship.
Each Act will include a historical timeline and curated visual material designed to present history with clarity and context.
As part of the State Bar of New Mexico’s Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition, marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, we invite members of New Mexico’s legal community to reflect on a simple but enduring question: What Does It Mean to Be an American?
Selected submissions may appear in the Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition.
This commemorative special edition of the Bar Bulletin will be grounded in historical context and institutional reflection. It will draw on archival materials and historically informed narratives.
The publication is intended to examine, not advocate. Its purpose is educational and historical, emphasizing the development of lawful institutions and the professional responsibilities that have endured across generations.
