About John J. Mudd

John J. Mudd

John Mudd has served as Executive Director of the State Bar of Montana since 2018, where he currently also serves as the organization’s general counsel. Before joining the Montana State Bar, John served in a variety of leadership roles, including Executive Counsel to the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance and Secretary of the Montana Senate. He spent seven years directing fundraising and alumni relations for the University of Montana’s Alexander Blewett III School of Law.

Earlier in his career, John practiced law in Missoula, Montana, representing individuals and businesses in civil disputes. He has served on a variety of boards, including the Montana Justice Foundation, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Missoula County, the Montana World Affairs Council, the Max S. Baucus Institute and the Institute for Well-Being in Law. He is a frequent speaker and writer on legal ethics, professionalism and attorney well-being. John is a graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He earned his law degree from the University of Montana School of Law.
